If you’ve noticed that I’ve been scarcer than usual here, it’s because I got a day job. A couple of them, actually. One is a work from home part-time thing, but the other is a minimum wage service industry job. It’s very physical and quite menial; I leave work every day bone-tired. Between these two jobs and my Patreon I still don’t make a living wage – the combined income is not enough to even rent a studio apartment in most areas of Los Angeles.
When I got the job I was worried that someone might recognize me as I was cleaning toilets; this isn’t just my enormous ego talking, the job is in a sector that attracts movie fans. On my first day I saw an acquaintance who works on a big TV show; I’m not sure if he saw me, but we didn’t have an interaction. I was grateful for that.
So as you can imagine the kerfuffle about Geoffrey Owens, formerly Elvin on The Cosby Show, has hit home. The actor was spotted – and photographed! – bagging groceries at a Trader Joe’s. What followed was a perfect internet storm, first of people mocking the actor and then people getting mad at the people mocking the actor (and thus spreading the photo farther and wider. The internet is the ultimate home of “This tastes like shit, try it.”). A lot of people spoke up about how hard it is to make a living in the arts, and that having a job – any job – is laudable and honorable.

The Wizard of Oz is one of my favorite movies, but I used to really hate the ending. I couldn’t get with Dorothy’s realization that there was no place like home, especially after she had been in candy-colored Oz and seen so many wonders. It felt like a cop out to me, like the movie just needed to end and it couldn’t end with this girl separated from her family forever.
Like so many other things in my life, I was wrong about the ending of The Wizard of Oz. Sure, Dorothy’s last lines are a little extreme (“And I’m not going to leave here ever, ever again, because I love you all!” Like, leave the door open for a nice vacation, or even a road trip), but it’s the insight she gets in her final moments at Oz that has become meaningful to me:
“And it’s that if I ever go looking for my heart’s desire again, l won’t look any further than my own backyard… because if it isn’t there, l never really lost it to begin with.”

Someone left a comment on one of the personal blog posts here, asking a question.
“Dude, who are you writing this for?”
Good question, and it’s one I’ve been thinking about for a few days. The obvious answer is “Me.” That’s the really simple answer, and it’s correct. I write little essays about spirituality or recovery or philosophy or whatever because writing is how I process stuff. A lot of the time I’m writing about things that are bothering me, or ideas I’m trying to understand, or about failings that I have, and I’m trying to work through them.
But that isn’t the whole answer. If I were writing for me, why even bother publishing (beyond narcissism)? It’s because I believe that whatever I’m processing at the moment can be of value to someone else.

This review spoils the entirety of season two of Jessica Jones. It’s also almost exclusively about plot/theme, and largely ignores performance, cinematography, etc.
The first season of Jessica Jones is the best work that Marvel TV has done. That’s a low, low bar, but it’s actually an excellent season of television, one that works even without the tyranny of the low expectations of The Defenders. The season had all the elements needed to make magic: a great character who is deeply flawed, a terrific villain played by a perfectly cast actor, and a moral arc that spoke to both character and theme. A little long, as all Netflix shows are, JESSICA JONES nonetheless kicked a tremendous amount of ass.
Season two thus has a higher bar to clear. And it’s doing so without the cushion of a storyline and villain that’s already been hashed out in comic book form; season two’s Big Bad is an invention of the show, more or less. But Jessica Jones’ behind the camera team is up to the task, and once we take into account the Law of Netflix (“Henceforth let it be known that all series shall be, at minimum, two episodes too long and thus introduce a lethargic meandering at some point in the season”), we see that they made a new season that matches up to the first.

Did you see the New York Times story about the guy who is staying ignorant of all Donald Trump related news? It’s so crazy that I half think it’s a hoax; the premise is that on November 8 this former Nike executive was so traumatized by Trump’s win that he decided he would ignore ALL news about Trump, going so far as to wear white noise headphones when at the coffee shop.
Let’s assume this is not a hoax. We can approach this guy from a few perspectives. The least helpful perspective is the one where we clown him and say bad things about him. Slightly more helpful is the perspective where we note that a wealthy white guy has the privilege to just ignore the horrors Trump is visiting upon our nation. But that’s only helpful if we turn it inwards – what are WE ignoring in the world thanks to our privilege of living in industrialized nations? Recognizing where this guy is wrong is useless unless we take that recognition and internalize it.
But maybe the most interesting (for me, a nerd) perspective is the Wakandan one.

Spoilers for the latest episodes of Star Trek: Discovery ahead.
The back half of Star Trek: Discovery’s first season has been a mixed bag for me. The Mirror Universe stuff has been okay, but has also often been a bust. Making Lorca an MU doppelganger is too cheap and easy, in my opinion – the show was traveling down an interesting path in examining a man coping with trauma and possibly processing it poorly. Saying “he’s just from the goatee-verse!” cheapens what the show had been previously doing with the character, and makes him sort of lame in the process. I hold out hope that the season finale will find Prime Universe Lorca showing up.

I don’t love the term “self-improvement.”
Between recovery, therapy and Buddhism I engage in a lot of activities that people might call self-improvement. I’m also on Weight Watchers, and making my first tentative steps towards some kind of exercise regime. But nothing that I am doing feels like self-improvement. I don’t feel like I’m adding a wing to this house of me or putting in a pool. I feel like I’m returning myself to a true original state.
This is restoration, not improvement.
